Throughout Valor Mortis, you'll need to spend some time seeking out Transmutation Materials if you wish to upgrade your Fire, Stasis, and Shield Transmutations to their max capacity. For this, you'll also need Transmutation Material of varying rarities, as higher-level upgrades need rarer materials.

Crude Transmutation Material #1

When faced with the Grenadier enemy who is surrounded by explosive barrels in the Valley of Ashes, this is found on the small elevated patch of land that he initially stands on.

Crude Transmutation Material #2

After unlocking the shortcut beside the Fields Lantern in the Valley of Ashes (this is after exploring the barns in the area and shooting a Nepthtoglobin node that unblocks the path back to the Lantern), go into the barn that's left of the shortcut to find this Crude Transmutation Material.

Crude Transmutation Material #3

From the Orchard Lantern in the Fallen Village, turn around and enter the Orchard itself, where there are multiple villager enemies. This item is sitting atop a well in the area.

Crude Transmutation Material #4

After unlocking the Grapple ability, go to the burning village that's across the pond from the Marketplace Lantern in the Fallen Village area. If you follow the grapple points through the area, you'll find this Material on a bed in the lower level of one of the buildings.

Crude Transmutation Material #5

From the Old Mine Lantern in the Caverns, go straight ahead into the mines. You need to use the crate here – that you can freeze using Stasis – to reach the opposite side of the room. In the following bit of cave, go straight ahead towards the fiery mutant and right into an area with two more mutants. Kill them and loot the items on the floor to receive this Crude Transmutation Material.

Crude Transmutation Material #6

From the Eerie View Lantern in the Cursed Hollow, go straight ahead and into the house on the left. Go through this house and into the swamps on the other side, then up the ramp here to reach the upstairs interior of the house you were just in.

Go across the planks and into the next house, then look right; there's an orange Nepthoglobin node to shoot here and a single mutant enemy. Once they've been taken care of, you can loot this piece of Crude Transmutation Material from the floor.

Crude Transmutation Material #7

Complete the Sleeping Beauty side quest in the Cursed Hollow and choose to wake her up to receive this piece of Crude Transmutation Material.

I assume you will also receive this Material alongside additional rewards should you let her sleep instead (which is the better side quest outcome for what it's worth), but I haven't been able to personally test this just yet.

Crude Transmutation Material #8

The following assumes you have already unlocked some of the shortcuts in the Cursed Hollows area.

From the Island of Whispers Lantern in the Outskirts, look left and go across the tree branch here. (This is one of the aforementioned shortcuts, unlocked by shooting the Nephtoglobin node on the other side of the tree.) Go across the bridge and into the ruined building directly in front of you. (If this door is locked, it's another one of the aforementioned shortcuts and needs unbolting from the opposite side.)

Inside the ruined building, climb up the white crate in front of you then U-turn to face a second wooden platform you can climb onto. Go along the wooden platforms ahead of this, using the Nephtoglobin foundations once you get to them. Then go right around the edge of the building.

Jump onto the edge of the next building and go right to come to a room with two mutant enemies; clear them out then grab the item on the floor here, which is a piece of Crude Transmutation Material.

Crude Transmutation Material #9

The below assumes that you have unlocked multiple shortcuts between the Tribunal Square Lantern and the Shamble Street Lantern in the City of Orphans. (The first is the steel gate near the guillotine that's locked from the other side, the second is the large steel gate beside the Shamble Street Lantern that can only be opened using the lever on the opposite side of it, and the third is the ladder near the first gate I mentioned that must be kicked down from above.)

By using all of the aforementioned shortcuts from the Tribunal Square Lantern, you'll be able to reach the area with the large statue and large wooden fort very quickly.

In this area, go to the opposite side and past the Volunteer enemy to arrive in an alleyway. At the end, grapple the blockade on your right to pave a way forward. Go through the now-removed blockade and up the ladder opposite it, then swing on the tree here to reach the platforms opposite you. Go around the right-hand side of this building and up the ladder that follows. At the top, look left to collect a piece of Crude Transmutation Material from atop a crate.

Crude Transmutation Material #10

From the Main Hall Lantern in the University, go upstairs and through the central door (assuming you have already unlocked this shortcut, and the Library Key). Go into the office on the right and call the elevator, then ride it upwards.

Atop the elevator, go right, where you'll need to navigate a bunch of Nepthtoglobin foundations (and use them to your advantage to block enemies). Once you're past the foundations and in the next hall, where there are multiple mutant enemies, keep left to find a piece of Crude Transmutation Material on the floor.

During the story, a single piece of Crude Transmutation Material can be purchased from Louis at the Abandoned Church for 2000 Catalysts.

Pure Transmutation Material #1

From the Poisoned Camp Lantern in the Vale of Wrath, go into the camp and begin clearing out all the gunmen using your Musket. Head up the ladder on the right-hand side of the area and go along the wooden platforms – where all the gunmen are shooting from – to reach the left-hand side of the camp, which is initially blocked off by Nephtoglobin.

On this side of the camp, make sure to shoot the orange Nephtoglobin node that's on the side of the wagon so you can freely and easily access the camp in its entirety. Otherwise, go to the opposite end of the camp from where you entered, where there are two bridges you can cross. Go along the bridge on the left and along the path ahead to find the Thief's Note; turn around after grabbing this to find a chest containing this Material.

Pure Transmutation Material #2

From the Village Church Lantern in Cursed Hollow, go into the village ahead and keep straight while looking for a house on your right that has a wreath on the front door. Go inside of this house, upstairs (being careful of the poison here), and onto the wooden balcony outside. Here, you'll find a piece of Pure Transmutation Material.

Pure Transmutation Material #3

From the Silent Cannons Lantern in Cursed Hollow, use the moving platforms to head along the sunken rooftops on the right. On the first rooftop you come to that has a Swarm Mother enemy on it, you'll also find this piece of Pure Transmutation Material.

Pure Transmutation Material #4

From the Harbour Lantern in The Outskirts, go straight ahead and follow the carriage tracks along the bridge. At the end, look at the table on your right to collect a piece of Pure Transmutation Material.

Pure Transmutation Material #5

From the Main Hall Lantern in the University, go upstairs and right through the open door. Use the Nephtoglobin foundation here to jump to the opposite side of the hall. Go right next, then left, and then burn the yellow growth blocking the doorway here so you can continue.

Go left again and keep right along the following hallway. You should arrive at two staircases (and multiple enemies). Destroy the orange Nepthtoglobin node that's atop the rightmost staircase, then head right here. There's a staircase to go up next, and two more enemies atop it to kill.

Once they've been taken care of, go down the long hallway ahead. At the end, go right to find yourself in a circular room with a ladder. Go up the ladder and left around the edge of the building, but prepare for an enemy, as well as a Volunteer who has a musket. Try pick him off at range before platforming over to him.

After the Volunteer, go along the wooden platforms just past him and down the ladder once you reach it. Then, climb back into the building from here. Next, go straight ahead into a large hall, and downstairs into the library. Unbolt the double doors here and go down the staircase to your left, then behind the statue here. You'll find a piece of Pure Transmutation Material on the floor.

Pure Transmutation Material #6

From the Traverse Lantern in the Fortress area and assuming you're facing away from the locked gate (which needs to lit signal towers to open), go straight ahead and right past the Eternal Guardsman and Volunteer enemies.

In the next area, keep right and straight ahead to come to some ruins you can climb up. You'll be able to take a breather here but not for long, as another shielded enemy is up ahead. Go along this passage then use the Nephtoglobin formations that follow to reach the opposite side of the ruins.

Now, as you do this, look down and you should see some Howler enemies below you that guard an item. This item is a piece of Pure Transmutation Material. I recommend picking off as many enemies down here as you can using your firearms, then jumping down.

Pure Transmutation Material #7

Defeat Etienne Vauclair in the Fallen Village during The Oathbound side quest then open the chest he was guarding. If you need help tracking him down, take a look at my The Oathbound walkthrough.

Distilled Transmutation Material #1

From the Deep Water Lantern in Cursed Hollow, go right and then turn left towards the Iron Marshall-like enemy once you see him. Behind him and on the left is a chest containing a piece of Distilled Transmutation Material.

Distilled Transmutation Material #2

From the Island of Whispers Lantern in the Outskirts, jump across the rooftops of the submerged buildings to the right. You'll find a shrine beneath the oil lamp here that has the Torn Page with Shrike's Anthem note. Collecting this kicks off the The Shrike's Anthem side quest.

Go past where you found the Torn Page and around the buildings here until you come to a bridge; cross this and clear out the enemies that are in the following village. In the village, go into the first barn on your left and upstairs. In front of you, there's a window you can climb through. Go left after this to find a chest that contains a piece of Distilled Transmutation Material.

Distilled Transmutation Material #3

From the Sewers Lantern in the City of Orphans (and after finding the Sewers Key), go straight and unlock the gate on your left once you arrive at it, then go up the stairs into another part of the sewers. If you go through the next area, clear out the enemies, then go left towards the blue Nepthoglobin blockade you can pull, you'll create a shortcut back to the Sewers Lantern.

After unlocking this, go back on yourself and go right. Here, you need to jump onto the railing and land on the Nephtoglobin foundation on the other side. To the left of this, you can loot the Sewers Master Key from the floor.

Go back on yourself through the entirety of the area you were just in to reach a gate you can unlock using the Sewers Master Key. Exit and go straight ahead to find a chest containing a piece of Distilled Transmutation Material.

Distilled Transmutation Material #4

From the Lift Shaft Lantern in the University (and assuming you have found the Lift Shaft Key in the room full of Howler enemies), ride the elevator downwards and go into the passage opposite it (not the one that leads to a glowing, green room).

Along this passage, there's a lot of enemies to be wary of so tread carefully. Otherwise, you want to go right to enter a room full of tables with corpses on them. Pull the lever on the wall in this room to open a secret door, then go through that.

Go down the staircase to arrive in a large corridor with some equally large enemies. Once they've been dealt with, go straight ahead to the end of this chamber and left up a short staircase. At the top, there's a chest you can open to receive a piece of Distilled Transmutation Material.

Alternatively, you can reach this from the Laboratories Lantern in the University. Simply go along the poisonous path straight ahead then right, then right up the small staircase that leads to the chest.

From the Courtyard Lantern in the Fortress, go through the archway with the tricolore above it. Then, once you reach the crossroads ahead, go left to be met with a particularly tough Eternal Guardsman enemy. Behind him, you can loot a piece of Distilled Transmutation Material from the floor.

The below assumes you have lit both signal towers and unlocked the gate beside the Traverse Lantern.

From the Traverse Lantern in the Fortress, go through the newly-unlocked gate up ahead. Through the gate and on your immediate left is a chest you can open to receive a piece of Quintessential Transmutation Material.
