GTA 6 Romance and Bond system explained

GTA 6 will see you playing as both sides of the criminal couple that is Jason and Lucia, and not only will you be able to relatively freely switch between the two protagonists, but you'll also be able to spend some time building their bond with one another using GTA 6's new relationship system: the Bond system.

How much or how little you interact with this couple and meddle in their relationship is up to you, though. Below, you'll find everything we know about GTA 6's Bond system so far, including what increases Jason and Lucia's bond.

GTA 6 Romance and Bond system explained

The Bond system in GTA 6 is, so far, rather elusive in terms of how in depth it is and what it features, but what we do know for certain is that "whether you've nurtured the relationship or not will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out," according to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson in IGN's preview.

Nelson also shared with IGN that “you will always have the benefit of working together and having each other's back – whether they're romantically close or not doesn't change that. They will still work together. It's really about what you want for them, their story, and how it plays out."

So, it's safe to say that how much time you spend nurturing or neglecting Jason and Lucia's relationship will have some impact on their story. Whether that means that the overarching story of GTA 6 will be impacted is unknown, but given Jason and Lucia are at the forefront, it's very possible.

Nelson also notes that "just going through the story and playing missions together may not be enough to keep them together," so if you want Jason and Lucia to remain romantically intertwined throughout the campaign, you're going to need to spend some time increasing their bond with one another.

It ultimately appears as though the pair will engage in criminal activity together regardless of where their romantic relationship stands, so you need not engage with the bond system if you don't want to, but Rockstar's Rob Nelson definitely encourages players to give it a go in IGN's preview: "Hopefully that will reinforce your connection to them and increase your investment in their story."

Now, how does one go about increasing Jason and Lucia's bond with one another?

How to increase Jason and Lucia's bond in GTA 6

In IGN's preview, Nelson states that "you manage the relationship in the way you hopefully nurture any relationship," before giving some explicit examples of, well, typical couple things that couples do. The core of all these activities is simply having Jason and Lucia spend time with one another outside of the main story.

I've listed some examples of things the pair can do to increase their bond below:

  • Explore the open-world together.
  • Complete side activities together, like pool, golf, kayaking, going to the gym, visiting the zoo, and more.
  • Complete robberies together, whether that's robbing banks or gas stations.

We'll be sure to update this page once we know more about which activities increase Jason and Lucia's bond with one another, as well as what bearing their Bond will have on your experience of the game.
