Steam Makes AAA RPG 100% Free Until September 21

Steam gamers have less than a week left to play one of the most divisive RPGs of the decade entirely for free.

As of now, Diablo IV is entirely free-to-play on Steam, at least for a few more days. Diablo IV is set to be available for free through September 21, while gamers have until September 24 to purchase Diablo IV in its Standard Edition form for a whopping 75% off.

Diablo 4 Is Completely Free for a Limited Time

Developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, Diablo IV was released in 2023 to decidedly divisive responses from critics and gamers. Diablo IV drops players into the role of the Wanderer, who becomes a victim of the demonic Lilith before escaping her clutches and setting out on a quest to Hell and back in order to put an end to her reign and free themselves of her influence.

While Diablo IV was met with generally favorable reviews from critics, garnering numerous major industry award nominations and four wins including Online Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards, it was widely lambasted by many players for how quickly it became a repetitive experience at the outset. In spite of this, Diablo IV still sold more than 12 million copies within three months of its release, and had reached more than 24 million units sold by early 2026.

Back in April, the latest Diablo IV expansion, Lord of Hatred, gave players a whole new epic main quest to embark upon, as well as a whole host of monstrous new enemies to face off against. On top of the latest campaign, Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred finally gave longtime fans the Cow Level experience that the title had been sorely missing up to that point, not to mention two new classes to master in the forms of the Paladin and Warlock.

The official campaign summary for Diablo VI: Lord of Hatred from Blizzard Entertainment reads, "Sanctuary was born from rebellion—a fragile refuge between Heaven and Hell. Though Lilith was defeated, her legacy endures as Neyrelle struggles to contain Mephisto, the Prime Evil of Hatred. Now his power stirs once more, spreading corruption toward the sacred isles of Skovos and threatening all of Sanctuary."

Looking toward the future, Diablo fans can expect the opportunity to explore their favorite dark fantasy series in an entirely new way with the upcoming Diablo animated series from Blizzard Entertainment and Netflix. Following the announcement of the series, Blizzard released a statement reading, "After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens. A new animated series set in the world of Diablo is in development with Netflix. More details will be shared in the future, but this is only the beginning, with even more taking shape across our universes."
