Studio Behind PS3, PS4 Games on the Verge of Closure

An internal memo from Xbox CCO Matt Booty has been made public, and it includes grim news for one PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 studio. The studio in question is responsible for some of the best-known games on the two consoles and might be nearing closure.

According to the memo, two separate negotiations between Xbox and Ninja Theory, the studio behind games such as Hellblade and DmC: Devil May Cry, have fallen through. It further stated, “We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.”

Ninja Theory was responsible for some of the most prestigious titles to come out of Xbox, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice chief among them. However, poor sales seem to have made the company a liability. The proposed closure comes as part of a wider restructuring of the company, which started in June, and is the catalyst for proposed 3200 job cuts.

As revealed by the memo, consultation with employees, as required by law, has begun regarding the proposed closure of the company. However, Booty also mentioned that they might explore “other paths forward”, indicating that all hope might not be lost for Ninja Theory and its 150+ employees.

The restructuring at the company is reportedly 75% complete, with a remaining 800 jobs still hanging in the balance. It is unknown how this restructuring will be rolled out and when it is expected to be complete.

However, there might be an update on October 6, as stated in the memo. It read, “Today, our focus should be on supporting those affected and treating one another with care and respect. I will spend time with our studios over the next week. At our October 6 town hall, we will come together as an All-Xbox team to reflect on our progress and look ahead to one of the strongest game lineups in our history.”
